Meet Our Board

Deb Sexsmith

Deb Sexsmith

Chair

Deb joined the 1UP board because of her interest to give back to the organization that helped her so much many years ago as a single mother with two little girls. She has a degree in Business Administration and is a Chartered Professional Accountant. Her career has taken her from local government, University of Victoria and BC Ferries as a Manager in Human Resources. She has lived on Vancouver Island for over 30 years and has served on various non-profit boards and as president of a school parent advisory committee.

Bridget Hughes

Bridget Hughes

Vice Chair

What attracted Bridget to this organization is the great work they do in the community with helping single parents as she has been a single mother herself with four children. Bridget has a degree in Justice Studies from Royal Roads University and worked in the legal field for 19 years. She is currently working towards her Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation. Her career has taken her from working in law offices, instructing the legal assistant program to working for ICBC as a Claims Specialist. She has volunteered with many community organizations within Victoria over the decades and is looking forward to sharing her knowledge with this organization.

Frances Hobbis

Frances Hobbis

Secretary

Fran was born in North Vancouver and has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of British Columbia.  Over the course of ten years, she worked as a paralegal for a number of law firms in downtown Vancouver, specializing in corporate records and securities. She and her husband moved to Vancouver Island in 1991, where their two daughters were born, and she went to work for BC Ferries in 1995.  In 2020, she retired from the company after 25 years of service.  For more than five years, she was on the board of directors, eventually in the role of chair, of the Downtown Victoria Business Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting small business owners in Victoria.  She has a certificate in non-profit governance from the Institute of Corporate Directors.  Fran is a graduate of Leadership Victoria and has led a number of volunteer initiatives in the Greater Victoria community.  She wanted to join the Board because of its focus on support, community, and inspiration for single parents.

Erwin Martinez

Erwin Martinez

Director

Erwin is a career IT executive, most recently working as the Chief Information Officer for BC Ferries and, before that, Coast Capital Savings
Credit Union. He has a BA degree from Yale University and an Institute of Corporate Directors certification from the SFU Beedie School of Business. Erwin has been on non-profit boards before, such as with Rebuilding Together Marin, in California. He lives on Vancouver Island with his family. Erwin joined the 1-Up board knowing the great services 1-Up provides to a sector of our community — single parents — that well benefits from such services.

Shirley Bains

Shirley Bains

Director

Shirley is a Chartered Professional Accountant who retired in 2019 from her position as Corporate Controller at British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. Over the years, she volunteered with various societies and charitable organizations. Shirley was a single parent with limited support for many years, raising two children in Victoria. She understands the value of a helping hand, whether it is a loaf of bread, a winter coat, a special birthday gift, counselling, or just the opportunity to socialize with peers. Shirley is committed to offering a meaningful contribution to the Board to help build community and support the way forward.

Darren Abrahams

Darren Abrahams

Director

Darren is a registered clinical counsellor working at BC Cancer and serves as a chaplain with the Canadian Armed Forces.  Over the years he has helped with numerous community engagement activities and both in Canada and Australia in wanting to assist people holistically in whatever way possible.  Darren was captivated by this organization’s heart to assist and empower single parent families living  in our community and loves working with this great team to see the vision become reality.

Kerry Chalmers

Kerry Chalmers

Director

Kerry worked as a Registered Nurse in Victoria for 40 years and in her retirement is exploring other ways of helping people in her community. As a mother of two she understands how vital it is to support parents as they raise our next generation and being part of this organization is an important part of that.
